The British Comedy Awards 16 December 2005
The British Comedy Awards were on last night, as normal it descended into total confusion and ran over time. Sadly I don’t think we will see moments again like when having been presented with his Lifetime Achievement Award, Spike Milligan interrupted a dedication from lifelong fan Prince Charles, to call the future king a “grovelling little bastard”.
The Channel 4 series The Smoking Room - both of which wiped the floor with ‘Little Britain’, which took best comedy program as well as the Ronnie Barker writer of the year award. Personally I think it’s an insult to Ronnie Barker’s memory and genius by awarding Little Britain… which was a show written two years ago and they use the same script each episode since. How you can compare the vomiting over cakes made by unmarried mothers is beyond me.
Having said that, quite why ‘The Catherine Tate Show’ even got a mention is beyond me. Maybe I’ve missed the joke, but its crap.
On the plus side, finally, long over due- the vastly underrated comedy actor Chris Langham picked Best Comedy Actor and his show ‘The Thick of It’, picked up best New TV comedy. Maybe there is hope yet…
Update
This was written prior to Langham’s arrest by Kent Police in connection internet child pornography. In September 2007 he was sentenced to ten months in prison.
